About ubnas

What ubnas is, how we put guides and calculators together, and how the site is funded.

About ubnas

ubnas is an independent site about network-attached storage (NAS), self-hosting and homelabs. It exists to help you plan before you spend: how much usable space a set of drives really gives you, what a box costs to run for five years, how long an SSD will last under your workload — and then how to set up the apps and backups that make a NAS worth owning.

What you will find here

  • Calculators. RAID / ZFS / SHR / Unraid capacity, NAS power cost and SSD endurance. They run in your browser, and every result shows the formula behind it.
  • Guides. Buying advice, setup walkthroughs and explainers for NAS hardware, storage, self-hosted apps, backup and homelab basics.

How we work

  • Sourced, not tested. We do not run a hardware lab, and we don't present research as hands-on testing. Specifications come from manufacturer datasheets, reliability figures from large public datasets such as Backblaze Drive Stats, and setup steps from official project documentation — linked so you can check them.
  • Calculated in the open. Where a number can be worked out, we show the working. If you disagree with an assumption, you can change it in the calculator.
  • Independent. No NAS vendor owns or sponsors ubnas.
  • Corrected quickly. Articles carry published and updated dates, and we fix errors as soon as they are reported.

More detail is on how we work.

How we make money

ubnas is reader-supported. Some links are affiliate links — if you buy through them we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide what we recommend. See our affiliate disclosure.
